Choosing Dentures Over Implants

Many patients want their dream smile without a surgery. To place dental implants, Dr. Ruiz At Rightway dental will remove parts of your jawbone to place metal pillars to hold crowns. In dentures, an acrylic base is placed over your gums and can they can be taken out at any time. Additionally, people who are heavy smokers, take immune suppressing medications, abuse drugs or alcohol, are pregnant, have a chronic disease, or have poor oral health are better candidates for dentures. Before making a decision, talk to Dr. Ruiz and her team to find the best option for you!

How to Care for your Dentures

Just because you have dentures, does not mean you can stop oral care. Actually, you need to add steps! First, you need to brush your dentures and your gums everyday. Before putting-in your dentures each morning, brush your gums and tongue to wake-up your mouth and stop the growth of plaque. When taking your dentures out, place a towel or bowl of water below you to catch the dentures if they fall. You never want to drop your dentures because they can break. Next, brush them with a soft bristled toothbrush or put them in a ultrasonic cleaner. Lastly, place them in a cup of water or denture cleaning solution overnight. Never use a cup of hot water. This could distort and ruin the dentures. The water will stop the dentures from drying out and extend the life of your dentures.

What Type of Dentures Should I Get?

Just like many dental treatments, there are lots of options! It is important to find the right denture solution for you. If you are missing teeth or if you are looking to better your smile, call Rightway Dental today to find the best option for you. Here are a few different types of dentures.

  • Full Dentures: This type of denture replaces all of the teeth in your mouth. Before your mouth can be measured, all of your teeth must be taken out. After this, there may be a short waiting period for the jawbone to adjust. Once the jaw is set, Dr. Ruiz and her team will order the full denture. While the jaw is adjusting, don’t worry, you will have teeth! Dr. Ruiz and her team can make a temporary item for you, called immediate dentures. We talk about these more below.
  • Partial Dentures: If you only have a few teeth that are missing, Dr. Ruiz may opt to use a partial denture instead of a bridge or dental implant. A partial denture is attached to existing teeth with rings or crowns that fit over your teeth.
  • Immediate Full Denture: As mentioned above, this is not a long-term option, but it is used to replace the missing teeth. While your jaw and tissue heals from, your immediate dentures may become misaligned as the jawbone adjusts. This is normal. To refit the dentures, visit Dr. Ruiz and her team at Rightway Dental.
