Tips to Prevent Your Children From Getting Cavities

No one wants to hear they have a cavity. Tooth decay affects your oral health and it could cause you a lot of pain not to mention it’s expensive to fill. This is the same for children, pre-teens and teenagers. If you fail to teach your children daily dental care habits, then you can expect them to get cavities, and have to go through what could be traumatic, uncomfortable and expensive dental procedures. To give your kids the best dental bill of health, follow the tips below:
Tips to Implement to Prevent Cavities:
  • Start good oral habits early. Teach your kids to brush their teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and to floss at least once per day. Flossing at night after they have brushed their teeth is the best way to go so there’s no food lodged between their teeth or gums all night long. Get enough fluoride. Regular use of fluoride toughens your child’s enamel, making it harder for acid to penetrate. Remember sugar turns into acid, which causes tooth decay.
  • Limit or avoid foods high in sugar. Oral bacteria can easily spread through your children’s teeth and gums. Schedule routine visits to your children’s dentist. Twice a year should be sufficient. Some families even prefer visiting their dentist every four months. You’ll want to make your child’s initial appointment once his or her first tooth emerges, and visit at least twice a year.
  • Avoid or limit sugary foods. Sugary foods like candy, cakes and cookies should be limited. Consuming any foods with a high sugar content increases the amount of acid-eroding plaque in your child’s mouth. If your child only prefers sugary or starchy foods like pasta, try introducing healthier options like salads, fruits and vegetables. For instance, peeling bananas and wrapping them in plastic wrap then in foil, and freezing them, and later unwrapping them and serving the frozen bananas as desert will be a huge hit. Frozen bananas are low in calories, sugars and they taste like banana ice cream. Other options are a low fat honey, vanilla or strawberry yogurt topped with washed blueberries or strawberries. A third option is buying frozen fruit like blueberries, strawberries or mango and adding fruit plus water and a banana in your blender and serving your child a smoothie. All of these options are great substitutes for any child who craves sugary foods. Encouraging your child to brush his or her teeth following every meal and snack will go a long way to getting your child a clean bill of health at his or her next dental visit.
  • Water-dense fruits and vegetables are your friend. Adding more fruits and vegetables that are high in water will keep your child hydrated while lessening his or her cravings for sugary foods. Watermelon is a tasty and ideal choice. As long as your child can consume nuts and doesn’t have a nut allergy, serving celery sticks with peanut butter is also a low-calorie, high in water snack option. Apple slices served with cheese is another healthy choice for snacks and is a complement or complete snack because the cheese is protein and the apple is a carbohydrate. Baby carrots and hummus is another high-value snack to replace dependence on sugary foods. Plus, any water dense fruit or vegetable increases saliva production and helps prevent bacteria from sticking to your child’s teeth.
  • Find alternatives to sugary drinks. Swap out sugary sodas for lemonade or sweet tea. Crystal Light offers both of these flavors plus additional flavors. Sodas are not only high in sugar but they also are somewhat addictive and will add empty calories and when consumed daily. This means your son or daughter may gain unnecessary weight if consumed on a regular basis.
  • Sealants prevent cavities. Inquire about sealants the next time you talk to your dentist. Sealants can provide years of protection from cavities as it fills in cracks and spaces where bacteria can build-up and cause cavities.
  • Always have bottles of cold water handy for your children. The more your child is hydrated the better they’re overall dental and oral health will be. Think of water as yet another way of ridding bacteria from your child’s mouth. If your child hates water, try flavored water. Lime, grape or cherry flavored water might do the trick. Adding fluoride or fluoridated water also helps to keep cavities at bay.
  • Avoid or limit sticky foods from your child’s diet. Avoid or limit foods that are hard to remove from your child’s teeth like caramel candy, honey or taffy. All of these food items form acids in your child’s mouth and will eventually lead to increased tooth decay.
