Toothache is a common problem that affects more than half of the population at some point in their lives. Toothache is an unpleasant, often painful sensation in a tooth, which can be caused by a variety of conditions. The most common cause of a toothache is an infection or inflammation of the soft tissues (gingiva) around the teeth and gums.

Causes of Toothache

Toothache is one of the most common reasons why people visit their dentist. It can be caused by a number of different things, including dental decay and gum disease.

  1. Tooth decay

The main cause of toothache is tooth decay (cavity). If you have a cavity that affects the nerve inside your tooth, it may become infected and you may experience pain. Cavities develop when bacteria in your mouth break down food particles on your teeth and produce acid as a by-product. The acid attacks the enamel on your teeth and if it's left untreated, it can eat away at the outermost layer of your tooth. This can lead to cavities forming inside the tooth which will eventually weaken its structure.

  1. Gum disease

Gingivitis or periodontitis can make your gums swollen and painful. If you have gum disease, you may also notice bleeding when you brush your teeth or floss. You may also have bad breath (halitosis) or loose teeth if you don't treat gum disease early enough.

  1. Damaged teeth

Tooth pain can be caused by damaged teeth. If a tooth has been damaged or cracked, it may take longer than normal to heal. This is because the pulp inside the tooth will continue to try and repair itself, which can cause pressure on the nerve as well as pain in the tooth. Damaged teeth should always be treated by a dentist so that they can be repaired properly and so that any infection does not get worse.

  1. Malocclusion

Malocclusion refers to a misalignment of teeth and jawbone that can result in pain, difficulty chewing, and difficulty speaking.

Malocclusion occurs when the upper and lower teeth are not aligned properly with each other. It is often caused by an injury or trauma to the mouth or jaw, but it may also be inherited. People with malocclusion may experience toothache if the misalignment causes one tooth to touch another, which can cause pain or infection.

Should you consult a doctor for toothache?

If you have a toothache, the first thing to do is take an over-the-counter pain reliever like aspirin or ibuprofen. If that does not help, then you should consult a dentist as soon as possible.

If the pain is severe and persistent, you should see your dentist within 24 hours. Your dentist will ask you about your symptoms and medical history and may need to perform an examination to determine whether there are any other causes of your symptoms. This may include checking your gums, jaw joints and neck area for swelling or tenderness.

The dentist may also take X-rays of your mouth and bite in order to check for any abnormalities which could be causing your toothache. A dentist will usually prescribe antibiotics if he or she thinks there might be infection present in your teeth or gums.

Final Words

Many minor dental problems can be solved without the need for a dentist's expert care. However, there are some cases that require examination by a professional. It is therefore worth noting when it is better to visit a dentist.
